Informed by these experiences, Mrizek has committed to building a solution that uses AI to democratize access to homeownership, specifically targeting first-time buyers from underserved communities. SmartStart AI uses an AI-powered co-pilot that guides users through the process of buying a home, with a unique focus on supporting Black and Latino families who face disproportionate challenges in securing homeownership. Data from the National Association of Realtors highlights these disparities: while White families have an 80% application rate and a 72% homeownership rate, only 44% of Black families own homes, and only 7% apply for mortgages. By helping these communities become homeowners, Mrizek estimates that the economic impact could approach a quarter trillion dollars, benefiting not only individual families but also the broader economy.

The AI tool that SmartStart AI provides is not merely an informational resource but a dynamic, adaptable educational guide. It assesses where users are in the homebuying process, adapts to their learning needs, and eventually connects them to trusted real estate professionals. This tech-forward approach tackles two major pain points in homeownership for underserved communities: information accessibility and consumer trust. Notably, Mrizek points out how past institutional biases in lending practices have systematically disadvantaged minority families. The AI platform is his way of leveling the playing field, ensuring that all users—regardless of background—receive the support they need.

SmartStart AI operates as a two-sided marketplace. On one side, first-time homebuyers gain access to a free tool that prepares them for homeownership; on the other, credit counselors and real estate agents can partner with SmartStart AI to connect with informed, pre-qualified leads. Mrizek’s vision is to initially partner with HUD-certified credit counselors, whose guidance ensures that clients have the required financial literacy and down payments, positioning them as ready homebuyers. The end goal is a streamlined, high-quality pipeline of qualified leads, providing agents with clients who understand the process and can make informed decisions.

As Mrizek continues to develop SmartStart AI, he has identified key growth strategies. His immediate focus is to refine user experience and validate the product’s effectiveness by gathering feedback from credit counselors and potential buyers. In the long term, Mrizek envisions expanding SmartStart’s capabilities to create a white-label product for credit counselors and agents across the nation.
